Two Bite Cupcakes by Viola Goren [Book Inspection] [Cookbook] [My Real Life]

Well, another glimpse into my real life for you guys.  They're all culinary themed, it seems.  But hey, a lot of my life when I'm not reading has been being spent in the kitchen, so much fun!

A few weeks ago, my friend Emily and I got together to make Nutella Cupcakes.  Yes, you read that right, NUTELLA cupcakes made of awesome.  A devoted love of Nutella is something that Em sand I share, so when I found this Nutella cupcake recipe in a newish cookbook that I purchased called Two Bite Cupcakes by Viola Goren, I immediately emailed a pic of the recipe to Emily and told her we had to schedule a date to make these.  We were coming off of a very successful Nutella crepes experience, so we were both confident that these would turn out mega-delish.

The cookbook is full of really fun recipes.  Thing is though, a lot of the recipes call for things like crème fraiche or other ingredients that one does not normally have on hand, would take a while to make, or are expensive to buy (if you can find them!).

All of the recipes are designed to be made in the little mini cupcake pans, which is totally fun, and a lot of the recipes sound divine.  Just don't think you'll make them in the middle of the night when you're craving tiny little cuppycakes.  These all take planning and prep.

Our foray into the recipe was only quasi-successful.  It wasn't a total fail, the cupcakes themselves were delish, but the frosting?  Um.  There wasn't enough information in the recipe to help us be successful.  We followed the directions meticulously, but all we ended up with was scary runny, but still incredibly delectable choco-hazelnut slime. I really was looking for cupcakes like the picture, which fun mounds of light fluffy Nutella buttercream frosting. Not everything can always come out perfectly though, including the frosting.

Because of the lack of direction, warnings, and the utter fail of the fun frosting, I wouldn't recommend the book to anyone.  Check the pics in the background of the first picture and compare them to ours.  See anything different?  *sigh*

But in the end, all that matters is that we had fun, and that we spent a whole day playing in the kitchen with Nutella, right?  Thanks for a fun day, Em!  And happy bday to you today!!

Here are some pics from the process:
