I AM NUMBER FOUR Read Along Discussion #7 [Read Along]

Phew.  It's over.  *wipes sweat from brow*

Plot Summary:  Four runs away as fast as he can, hearing the beast behind him.  He runs into a soldier.  The soldier takes him to an alternate reality, and Four kills him there, coming back to Earth, so to speak.  Then he runs into a beast, and Bernie Kosar comes to his rescue in full chimæra mode, sacrificing himself so that Four could get away, but Four and Mark and Sam get rid of the beast (I think).  Then Henri dies, they get away, and the book is over, essentially.

The Questions:

  1. Did you like the ending?
  2. Have you come to accept Henri's death yet?
  3. Are John and Sarah still a couple?
  4. I still think that Mark is a giant plot hole.  Any dissenters?
  5. Will you read the next book in the series?
  6. Would you want to rely on these kids to save your life, and the fate of humankind?
  7. Were you disappointed that we didn't meet Pittacus Lore himself?
  8. Since the book is written in first person, by Pittacus Lore, are we to take it that John/Four is Pittacus Lore?
  9. Please add any other thoughts you have about the book!
Thank you everyone for participating!  I'll announce the winner of the giftcard on Monday evening, giving everyone a chance to catch up and discuss.  I had a lot of fun, and I hope you'll join us for our next Read Along!

1. Did you like the ending?
I'm extremely saddened about what happened to Henri. But, yeah. I liked the conclusion. After losing him, Four leaves. It's so fitting, and it's really sad. :( Interested to see what's next, so I think the ending does it for me. I know a lot of people wouldn't be though.

2. Have you come to accept Henri's death yet?
No. Sadly, though, he's gone. There's no possibility that he's still alive...

3. Are John and Sarah still a couple?
Considering how painfully stuck together they were, I'd say they still are. I'm thinking in the next book he's going to find someone else, another Lorien, and he'll forget about Sarah.

4. I still think that Mark is a giant plot hole. Any dissenters?
Okay. I read back over yesterday's comments. I'd say it's just the jumpiness in the development of Mark's acceptance of Four. The reason to invite Four to the party: To get Sarah to come too. Reason he's accepted Four: He saved his dogs, and since he's aware that Four is an alien by then, he's scared, and under such circumstances even the worst are shaken up to the point that they're unbelievably changed. I do think there should have been some stepping stones in between though...

5. Will you read the next book in the series?
Yes. Not sure about you, but I loved it! Sure, it's not perfect, but it was such a change from everything that I've read lately, and it was interesting and kept me reading.

6. Would you want to rely on these kids to save your life, and the fate of humankind?
Yes, because who else is going to save us?

7. Were you disappointed that we didn't meet Pittacus Lore himself?
Yes I am.

8. Since the book is written in first person, by Pittacus Lore, are we to take it that John/Four is Pittacus Lore?
I was pondering upon such a possibility, or at least finding it a bit funny that the book was "written by" Pittacus Lore, yet it was in first person. However, it does say in the "About the Author" that he's there to recount the events.

9. Please add any other thoughts you have about the book!
Not so much about the book as it is about the genre. I'm feeling up to venturing off to more of these kinds of books. I don't read all that many adventure/sci-fi books, so this was such a refreshing switch-up.

1. Did you like the ending?
Um, yes and no. I sometimes like a series book that doesn't leave me hanging so completely. I guess that this author's intent was to make sure that you'd read the second book. I will read it. I just don't that I am forced to to get any answers. But, I enjoyed this book overall.

2. Have you come to accept Henri's death yet?

No. I never will. He was a favorite character for me, like an Atticus Finch.
3. Are John and Sarah still a couple?
4. I still think that Mark is a giant plot hole. Any dissenters?

Yup. Most definitely. I hope that there are fewer holes in the next book.
5. Will you read the next book in the series?

Yes! My students have loved this book so far and I need to keep one step ahead of them. It's not easy!

6. Would you want to rely on these kids to save your life, and the fate of humankind?

Um. Not especially. But, I think that we're going to see some better decision making in the next book. Without Henri, John will have to be a little more reasonable.

7. Were you disappointed that we didn't meet Pittacus Lore himself?

YES! I was hoping that it'd be like Death in The Book Thief, where he had whole segments of the book where he stepped back and talked about what was going on. Mr. Lore was not a very good host!

8. Since the book is written in first person, by Pittacus Lore, are we to take it that John/Four is Pittacus Lore?

I don't think so. But, I don't know. Hm. I never thought of it that way. I thought that the "Lore" part related to a storyteller. I don't know about the "Pittacus" part. It's the name of one of the seven sages of Ancient Greece (I looked that up)...Hm. I hope that he makes more of an appearance in the next book!

9. Please add any other thoughts you have about the book!

Love the design...It's what made me buy the book in the first place. I'm definitely a visual shopper. I can't wait to see the next book in the series. It'll be interesting to see how the design stays the same/ is made different.

Thanks for hosting this! It was super fun.

1. Did you like the ending?

I liked it ok, although I thought it was all a little predictable. Actually the whole book seemed predictable and a little cliche to me. I don't like it when there's so much danger that the mc can't possibly make it out alive, then something comes along and wipes all the danger away. I know his newest realized Legacy was communicating with animals, but I didn't like that he turned the beast against them and it just wiped them all out. I thought it was too easy. But, I do like, given that it's a series, that the end had some sense of finality. It didn't feel like a total cliffhanger.

2. Have you come to accept Henri's death yet?

I was kind of expecting Henri's death, so it wasn't really hard to come to terms with. Also, I don't know if anyone else felt this way, but I just didn't really connect with any of the characters. None of them seemed fully realized to me, and they just seemed kind of flat. So, I didn't feel that emotionally connected to Henri. I would have been much more upset to see Bernie Kosar die...which I thought was about to happen!! :)

3. Are John and Sarah still a couple?

I think so. They say that they'll beet up again and she says that she'll wait for him. I would take that to mean they're still together. So, if he ends up with someone else, I think she would see that as a betrayal.

4. I still think that Mark is a giant plot hole. Any dissenters?

I think it could have been explained at some point, why he invited them to the party. It never really said. Honestly, I thought he was up to something, but I guess not. After the fire and John saving his dogs, I understand why he changed. He really loved those dogs! Then, once he got to know John, he realized that he was a good guy who really loved Sarah, and was fighting to save his planet.

5. Will you read the next book in the series?

I think I will. Although I may wait and see if my library gets it on audiobook. It's not one of those books that I'm dying to keep reading, but I did find the story interesting. I think it will make a good movie, and I'll definitely go see it!

6. Would you want to rely on these kids to save your life, and the fate of humankind?

Well, I wish that #4 was a little more level headed under pressure, but I think in time that will come. #6 seems pretty kick-A to me, so I'd like her on my side! Plus her Legacies are freaking awesome!!

7. Were you disappointed that we didn't meet Pittacus Lore himself?

I didn't think we would meet Pittacus yet. I wonder if we ever will. Did Lemony Snickett ever show up in the Series of Unfortunate Events books? I don't remember. That's what this reminds me of though. I think it's really a fun idea!!

8. Since the book is written in first person, by Pittacus Lore, are we to take it that John/Four is Pittacus Lore?

I don't know. I could see that being the case, it makes sense!

9. Please add any other thoughts you have about the book!

I did like the book, but it wasn't one of my favorites. I thought it read kind of young, and the fact that John was only 15 and is so in love with someone is a little strange. They act like an old married couple (without the sex...haha). I think that I liked all the ideas, and the characters, and the foreshadowing and everything, I just didn't feel like the author pulled it off quite right. It was like the story was too predictable, the characters were a little too flat (I mean did Sarah have ANY flaws at all??), and the foreshadowing was too obvious. I guess I just like to have to use my brain a little more...and I really like to be surprised! Overall I'd probably give this a 3 out of 5. It did make it SOOO much more enjoyable reading it with a group! Even though my internet is still gone....ugh! I'd love to do this again!

1. Did you like the ending?
The ending was just okay. It was exactly how I expected it to end. I am glad there wasn't a huge cliffhanger ending.
2. Have you come to accept Henri's death yet?
Yes I have. I expected his death, so no surprise.
3. Are John and Sarah still a couple?
Yes, but I don't think it will last.
4. I still think that Mark is a giant plot hole. Any dissenters?
Mark's presence still confuses me! I thought he hated Four and vice versa.
5. Will you read the next book in the series?
Yes, I will. I want to know what happens next.
6. Would you want to rely on these kids to save your life, and the fate of humankind?
Honestly...not really.
7. Were you disappointed that we didn't meet Pittacus Lore himself?
Nope. I think we will never meet him. Like Andye said, I think he is like Lemony Snicket.
8. Since the book is written in first person, by Pittacus Lore, are we to take it that John/Four is Pittacus Lore?
I don't think so. I think he is just the author telling Four's story.
9. Please add any other thoughts you have about the book!
I liked it overall, but I found myself bored when I was reading the huge battle scene.

Did you like the ending?
Yes! I am so satisfied with the ending. Of course, I sure wish there was more to the story. (Maybe this is the start of a series?) I thought the author did a great job taking the characters all the way through the story and providing a very suspensful and exciting ending. I truly felt like I was in the action.

Have you come to accept Henri’s death yet?
LOL! Do you mean will I need therapy after his death! ; ) I NEVER cry when I read books. I bawl like a baby at tear-jerker movies, but I have to admit I had watery eyes for this one. His death was so well written. Gut-wrenching.

Are John and Sarah still a couple?
Well, you know what they say – long distance relationships never last. I guess if Four and the rest of the crew find each other and take out all the bad guys, maybe they have a chance if she will (and can) go to Lorian with him.

I still think that Mark is a giant plot hole. Any dissenters?
I guess I sort of agree with you. He is more than just a “plot hole” LOL! I think it would take a lot more than saving his dogs to make him BFFs with Four. I mean Four basically stole his girl and made Mark look like an arse in front of the whole school. I mean the guy (Mark) left his dogs and his girlfriend in his house to burn… My thoughts tell me MAYBE it has something to do with what Henri was saying – that they were meant to come to Paradise. That MAYBE Mark has a roll to play. We just don’t really know it yet. Or maybe, like you said, he is a plot hole. LOL

Will you read the next book in the series?
Yes. No doubt. I have, though, had a really bad run with sequels lately. Seems like alot of the sequels I have been reading kind of suck. Hopefully this series is different and they will be just as good as the first.

Would you want to rely on these kids to save your life, and the fate of humankind?
They kind of seem like a bumbling band of buffoons. I think Six and Four need to get serious. I don’t think Four really has what it takes (as of right now) to save anyone’s life. Most of what he did in this book was by accident or he had help. Left alone, he is kind of worthless. He reminds me of Luke in Star Wars… he needs to complete his Jedi Training, but keeps getting distracted.

***I do have a question though. Why did they bring Sam with them??? He really doesn’t fit into the puzzle. And if they brought him, why not bring Sarah? Or Mark? And what is Sam’s mom going to do when her son goes missing? That is only going to bring attention to Four and Six.

Were you disappointed that we didn’t meet Pittacus Lore himself?
I gather that Pittacus Lore is the leader of the Loric people. He didn’t appear because it isn’t his time to be there. Maybe finding him will be the center of the next book.

Since the book is written in first person, by Pittacus Lore, are we to take it that John/Four is Pittacus Lore?
No. I don’t think so. I kind of gathered that Pittacus Lore was kind of a Lemony Snicket kind of thing.

Please add any other thoughts you have about the book!
First of all, I am so glad I picked this book up. It is getting a lot of face time on the internet – good and not so good. I didn’t have any strong negative feelings about it. In fact, I really enjoyed it. It might even be a book that I read over and over. In a few places around the internet I have read that Aliens are the new vampires… based on reading this book, I would have to agree!

Thank you to I Heart Monster for a very fun read a long! We at EFG will have to do a read-a-long real soon!
