I AM NUMBER FOUR Read Along Discussion #2 [Read Along]

Hey... here's a quick hint.  If you want to see what others are saying about the questions and stay up to date on the discussion, just click the subscribe by email link in the comments box.  It makes it super handy.

How are you guys doing so far?  Everyone engaged and loving the story?  Also, I made a little error.  We're discussing pages 75-137, which is chapters 8-12, not thirteen.  Thirteen is for tomorrow.  Sorry for the confusion!

Plot Summary:  So basically these chapters tell us a whole lot about Lorien as Four discovers things about his planet through the use of the Loric crystal.  He has visions of the Mogadorians coming and invading, of losing everything.  Also, the dog shows up at their door, causing them mild heart attack.  At school, John and Sam run the mile together and Bernie Kosar comes out of nowhere to hang with John at school.  John and Henri go to the Halloween parade (with Bernie of course) and see Mark, Sarah, and company.  John decides to go to the Haunted Hayride and sees Sarah and buys raffle tickets from her just as Mark comes up to bug them.  Sarah runs away and after John is done dealing with Mark, he goes after Sarah.  End of Chapter 12.

Answers:

Page 91 answers the question that some of us had about them living in smaller cities with this bit from Henri:

"The Mogadorians are different than we are, secretive and manipulative, untrusting of almost everything.  They have certain powers, but they're not powers like ours.  They are gregarious and thrive in crowded cities.  The more densely populated, the better.  That is why you and I stay out of cities now, even when living in one might make it easier to blend in.  It would make it a hell of a lot easier for them to blend in as well." --Henri

Today's Questions:

I might have a lot.  Sorry in advance.  Remember - pick and choose the ones you want to respond to if you don't have a lot of time.

  1. We know from the dust jacket that Pittacus Lore is on earth.  What do you think happened to the rest of the Elders?
  2. Why did the Mogadorians invade Lorien?
  3. Are Loric charms a form of intergalactic wizardry?
  4. Since the Loric peeps are fiercely monogamous, do you think that will transfer to Four via his lineage?  Or do you think that it's purely cultural and is something he could balk at? (especially since they move so much)
  5. How are you pronouncing Cêpan in your head (or out loud) as you read?
  6. Have you ever seen a Mogadorian?
  7. Have you caught onto the lesson we're supposed to learn about Mogadore vs. Lorien?  And do you feel like this is a common theme in alien lit?
  8. They Walk Among Us.  Discuss.
  9. I keep wondering how they are going to save the race if there are only like six of them left?  How are they going to have enough genetic diversity to keep a gene pool going?  And how are they going to find each other?
  10. If you had to live somewhere to hide from the Mogadorians, where would it be?

For tomorrow, read pages 138-199 (chapters 13-17).  Questions'll be up at midnight MST!

I like the little summaries. It's nice to go over everything again after having read the chapters. :) Some of my answers are pretty dumb, but it's midnight HERE, so I'm kind of sleepy and not thinking too straight.

1. My copy is the Aus paperback, so no dust jacket for me. Anyway, I'd like to believe there are more around Earth, too.

2. Wasn't it so that they could take hold of resources, in order to take on the "big cheese"?

3. Kind of. Except it seems to take more time for these to develop than witchcraft. I bet even they couldn't get glowing hands, though! :P And immunity to fire and heat.

5. Say-pen. See-pen. Hmm...I think I was saying the first.

6. I know what they look like. Lore made quite sure to get in on the details. Sadly I do not know a Mogadorian personally.

7. This is my first "alien" book... Why do I not hear gasps right now?

8. It's the dog! The dog!! You'll see... Well, okay. For now, I'm kind of going along with what's being given. That it could be the Mogadorians, trying to lure out Lorians by publishing stuff.

9. The last part is a VERY good point. How will they find each other? Food for thought. Hmm...I'm going to have to sleep on that one. Also, to be more specific, there are more than six Lorians left. :\

10. Inside a hole. Is that a possibility?

1. Maybe they were the ones on the other ship that John saw in his vision, so they could all be on Earth.
2. I think the Mogadorians invaded Lorien to steal their resources.
3. I guess they could be considered a form of intergalactic wizardry. I think it has to do with their powers.
4. I think it will definitely transfer to Four and his lineage.
5. I think I have been saying it like Su-pawn.
6. I don't think I have ever seen a Mogadorian in person.
8. I agree its the dog! I think the dog is going to play a major role.
9. I think it will be extremely difficult to save the race. Maybe there are some people on Earth are half Lorien that can help. I also think the six will marry people from Earth to keep the gene pool going. As for finding each other, maybe a vision will help.

1. I can't help but wonder if they've gone off to a life-sustaining planet that is more than one life-sustaining planet away from Lorien. But I hope and pray that they're going to be incorporated into the story.

2. 'Cause they killed their own planet. So, they decided to raid Lorien for resources and take them back to their own. Earth will probably be next. O_o

3. Sorry, I couldn't help but think Harry Potter here. All of these charms could only be done by the Elders of Lorien, (and the one who did these specific charms is now dead), so I kind of wonder if the magic power descends upon Loriens who obtain the station of Elder in the fashion that a Legacy would. It's original I think that the author kind of combined supa-fun alien powers with magical powers. I like it.

4. I kinda hope that it becomes a conflict later in the book and that he is in love with Sarah, but has to leave her, and has to find a Loric mate. But, I'm on the fence about whether he'll embrace the tradition or if he'll love her and leave her.

5. I'm pronouncing it Ch eh pawn. LOL. I think it's great that we're all pronouncing it differently. I googled to see how it's supposed to be pronounced, and I'm still not even sure. But, I did find an entry in a Gutenberg Project, A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary by John R. Clark Hall that defines cêpan as " to 'keep,' guard, observe, attend, look out for, take heed, Æ, Lcd, Ps: take, Æ: avail oneself of, betake oneself to, take to, bear: seek after, desire, Æ: meditate: regulate by: seize, Æ. II. = cýpan" which I thought was totally interesting since the Cêpan are guarding the Garde.

6. I'm pretty sure the guy who married us is one o_O

7. OMG. Don't pollute the planet, mmmkay? And no bombs, no wars, no fighting. Can't we just all get along? I'm kinda sick of this reason for alien invaders. Can't there be another reason? Like I dunno, everyone turned into zombies and we're the only ones that escaped?

8. Holy crap. With Tawyna's insight from yesterday, about the *insert helpful smart UFO-crazy BFF here, this just got even more crazy. I actually don't think it's the dog now. I think the pamphlet is going to become a major part of the book. I'm actually kinda hoping that Pittacus Lore wrote the pamphlet.

9. Can Garde mate with Cêpan? If so, there are more than six, yes, but dang. I'm still confused about this.

10. I'd probably find a cave in the wilderness and survive off of the land. Seriously. No phones, no internet monitoring, nothing. Just me, my Cêpan, and some books.

RE: the dog. I hope it's the animal that Four describes as being on the ship from Lorien with him. He remembers the animal playing back with him, and I really hope that's what Bernie Kosar is. Really.

And Cass, sorry about the dust jacket thing. We totally don't have it in Paperback yet! I should have probably picked less of a spoiler. Sorry sorry sorry.

I think that John (#4) will be as monogamous as other Loriens. I think that this is a cultural norm for him, but also just part of who he is as a person. He has a fierce interest in Sarah. I don't see him turning his head to check out any other ladies too soon. It's just not in his personality.

5. How are you pronouncing Cêpan in your head (or out loud) as you read?

I am pronounicing this word as "say-paan".

6. Have you ever seen a Mogadorian?

Just in my head whilst reading this book!

7. Have you caught onto the lesson we're supposed to learn about Mogadore vs. Lorien? And do you feel like this is a common theme in alien lit?

I think that the lesson that we're supposed to learn is that we need to protect what planet we have and not go taking amyone else's after we've ruined our own. That's what I'm getting and I think that this is a pretty common theme in alien lore. Like Avatar and some of Star Trek and Star Wars. I don't read a whole ton of alien lit, so I don't know that this is usually the case, but it definitely appears in the movies!

8. They Walk Among Us. Discuss.

I know too much about this because I've read the whole book. My lips are sealed : )

9. I keep wondering how they are going to save the race if there are only like six of them left? How are they going to have enough genetic diversity to keep a gene pool going? And how are they going to find each other?

I know. I don't really and truly get this part either, but it does make the plot a whole lot more stressed than if there were a few hundred or even a few dozen Loriens left. I think it's a lesser-planned plot point. Apparently, this will resolve itself in future books? Maybe they can mate with other species? Maybe Lorien genes are dominant and everything else is recessive? Dunno.

10. If you had to live somewhere to hide from the Mogadorians, where would it be?

Toughie. I guess I'd e next to Bin Laden in a cave somewhere. No one on earth seems to be able to find him...

This is so fun! Thanks.

Here is my post on Eve's Fan Garden... http://evesfangarden.com/blog/?p=4562

1.Can I just say I really love that the author has this whole Lemony Snicket thing going on! I would imagine the other Elders are either also on Earth or were wiped out with the rest of the Loriens.

~
2.According to the story in the book, they were looking for ultimate world domination - one planet at a time!

~
3.I see them as a form of runes like Cassie uses in the City of Bones stories.. kind of a protection charm.

~
4. Ideally on Lorien, I can see how being monogamous is feasible. At this point, Four doesn't really stand a chance at monogamy until the Mogadorians stop hunting him down. I think, though that he shows a tendancy towards kind of imprinting on Sarah. Whether or not their relationship is sustainable remains to be seen.

~
5. How are you pronouncing Cêpan in your head (or out loud) as you read?

/kay-pan/

~
6 Have you ever seen a Mogadorian?

If I tell you I would have to kill you... ; ) I picture them in my head like those Mangalore characters in the Fifth Element. They can totally change their appearance to blend in with the city-folk.

7. Have you caught onto the lesson we're supposed to learn about Mogadore vs. Lorien? And do you feel like this is a common theme in alien lit?

I guess I haven't caught onto this "lesson". I look forward to reading other people's posts to see what I am missing. I haven't read a lot of alien literature, so I am not sure what I am missing.

~
8. They Walk Among Us. Discuss.

I totally want to read this book, now! Don't you!??! It makes me think of Men In Black - all the aliens walking around Earth as celebrities and such! I just LOVE that Henri spends his time researching the alien "chatter" and movements using the news and newspapers. In MIB they used the National Enquirer! LOL!

~
9. I keep wondering how they are going to save the race if there are only like six of them left? How are they going to have enough genetic diversity to keep a gene pool going? And how are they going to find each other?

Well, I am sure at some point we will find out!

10. If you had to live somewhere to hide from the Mogadorians, where would it be?

Montana - I LOVED living in Montana! It is so remote and beautiful! I would go there again in a heartbeat.

@I Heart Monster: OMG! YES! I hope the dog is that creature, too. That would be awesome.

1. If Pittacus got out, it stands to reason that he grabbed someone to come along for the ride, but it seems like they should have stayed and fought the hardest.
2. Mogadorians are mean, and they ran out of grapes, so they cam to steal all the Lorien's grapes.
3. I think it's just wizardry that traveled intergalactically.
4. He's totally monogamous. It sounded like this was the first time he's even noticed a girl before. So cute.
5. How are you pronouncing Cêpan - say-pawn
6. I can't say for certain that I have seen a Mogadorian?
7. Ok, so is the real lesson to keep your gun in your back pocket? Even though the Loriens were able to revive their dying planet & live peaceably with each other - they still were slaughtered. So be nice, but be prepared for the worst??
8. Hmmmm, I can't really see anyone from Lorien providing the story - they are too scared and in hiding. But why would the Mogadorians give away their master plan? interesting.
9. Ok so 6 to save us all - not our best odds. Especially since a half of Lorien was the Garde & couldn't do it. Regarding the gene pool - the last chapter mentions the Elder's as being the ones who started their race & there were 10 of them, so it's possible. They are going to find each other using their intergalactic wizardry, duh.
10. Do these Mogadorians have some sort of Lorien scanner that is helping them to find the 9? Cuz I would just live somewhere that messes with it's signal. Unless there was no wireless there - then I would have to risk it.
