How Do You Organize Your Bookshelves? [You're The Expert]

I saw this article about someone who organized their bookshelves by color.  I wanted to laugh, but then I thought, "Wait.  That's pretty darn cool."  My bookshelves are a complete and total mess at the moment, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to organize them.  So, why not ask you guys?  What is the most effective way for you to organize YOUR bookshelves?  You are, afterall, the experts on you, and I learn a lot from you every time we do Your The Expert posts! So, please. Share!

If only I had bookshelves to organize. My shelves died after my toddler climbed on them, so as of right now my books live in laundry baskets in the bottom of my closet.

When I had shelves, I kept my to-read books separate from book I'd already read. I also like to separate by genre.

I also keep my to-read books separate. It used to be one shelf, but now it's two. Other than that, there is no rhyme or reason. One of these days I tell myself I'll organize it alphabetically, but we'll see if that happens or not!

I organize my books by genre and size. I have a few oversized books that need a shelf of their own. My ARCs, review copies, and newest books are on a bookcase of their own so I can always find them.

Mine are alphabetical by author. The color coordination looks pretty, but I don't have the space to do it. That and it would be hard to find something (especially if you are shelving that many books). It really draws attention though.

I have eight different bookshelves throughout my house and the books are organized by genre - more or less!

I organize mine by genre, signed, ARCS, to be reviewed, history, YA etc. Within my books, I slightly pull out the ones that I haven't read it, so that they stand out a bit more. Within each shelf or bookcase that's organized, I have them alphabetized by authors. I have one whole book case that's all series, like the Mortal Instrument series, Twilight, Harry Potter, Shannon Hale's series and more.

I only wish I organised mine! I don't even have enough shelves, so there are piles of books all over the floor... I will be watching your comments with interest to see if I can snag a good idea!

The books that I have enough shelves for are organized by series, then by author, alphabetically. The ones that I didn't have enough room for are very good friends with the floor.

Did you come back from your trip? How was it?

So, books.Well, first by series and then by genre, which is not always easy. The rest are shelved at random.Don't have THAT many, so I can keep track.

I have seven bookshelves - one is for books I've read and want to keep, one is for miscellaneous and hardbacks, and the rest are organized by genre and author where possible, but since they're stacked three deep, it starts to get harder to do.

I organize my bookshelves by Reference, Children's books, Religious books, Submarine books, and all others. Each category is sorted alphabetically by author. I also keep all unread books filed on separate bookshelves, by author.

I have many many books and am always getting more so as of now have all my books organized in 2 TBR shelves and they are by alpha author and series, then alpha author stand alones. My main accomplishment was finally after almost 29 years of "make do shelves" getting 2 wooden Oak Lawyer Book Cases with 5 shelves each and glass doors for my "Nice" Hardbacks and my Signed books that have started collection of in the last year from Authors. I also have two nice 7 shelf wooden tower book shelves that are in order the same as my TBR ...

I need more of the 7 shelf tower book shelves but money demands to be spent on proper bills instead, for this year anyway!!!!

I organise the series by size of the majority of its book (it they are trades or hardcovers or A format paperbacks etc), with the second defining factor being colour and then I organise the books in the series by publishing order. I also organise the Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy separately from the other genres, and Nora Roberts has her own shelf.

I have the highest rated books from GoodReads on my TBR shelf and then the rest of my books are usually stacked in order of height or however I shove them into the lower shelf.
