PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS by Michelle Zink [Giveaway] [Monster Birthday Party]

Have you guys seen the super awesome new covers for PROPHECY and GUARDIAN yet? Aren't they amazing? I got curious and had some questions about them, and the oh so awesome Michelle Zink was kind enough to answer them for me, so check out what she had to say right here, right now!

Do you have any insight into why the covers were changed?
The original cover did a great job of reeling in lovers of dark fantasy. It was also key in generating a tremendous cross-over audience, and I often receive comments from adults who picked up and loved the book not even realizing it's YA. But something interesting happened as time went on; we got an increasingly large number of compliments from teens who would say things like, "I wasn't sure if this would be my type of book, but once I picked it up, it was addicting!" Over time, we realized there was a mainstream audience out there that would probably love the book but that might not respond to the existing cover. I really liked the first Prophecy cover, but I was thrilled when Little Brown approached me about rejacketing. I felt like it was an opportunity to connect with a whole audience. I know it's sometimes difficult for readers to get their heads around a cover change, but when I love a book, I want the whole world to love it as much as I do, and if a new cover can increase the audience, I'm all for it! In the end, it's what's inside that counts, but you have to get readers there first, and let's face it, the cover is the "face" of the book!

Do you know if they are going to reissue hardcovers of PROPHECY in the new style?
Little Brown will only re-issue the hardcover with the new jacket if the existing print run sells out prior to the release of the paperback, which is pretty standard.

Which cover is your favorite?
An impossible question! And I swear I'm not just being PC here! I loved my first cover because it was unlike anything in the YA market. It was so original and striking. But I do adore these new covers soooo much! I love the way they have an extreme close up on the faces of the girls. Real models are used quite often on YA covers, but this particular composition is really unique. These new covers really reflect the sensuality of the era in a kind of period-neutral way. That was important to me because I can't tell you how many readers say that they didn't think they'd like a book set in the 1800s but go on to rave about Prophecy. I just think the new covers make the series accessible to a much, much wider audience.

Do you know anything about the models on the covers?
Not much! Little Brown held a casting call in NYC and these girls are sisters who came to the call. Originally, LB was thinking of going with non-twins in order to help them stand out from each other on the cover. But in the end, they couldn't get a combination they liked, and these young women are actually twins! How cool is that?! They look just different enough, though, to make you look a little closer, which is exactly what the cover needed, and they definitely have a look very close to the one I always have in my head for Lia and Alice.

I think it was a great idea to change the cover. The first cover didn't make me want to read it...but this one is totally different and really eye-catching!

The new cover for Prophecy of the Sisters looks very striking! I find the earlier version more appealing, though. It looks more mysterious to me.

I'm not a fan of the new covers at ALL. I'll still read the second book of course, but I wish they hadn't changed them. :/
Thanks for the contest!

I actually never get attracted to this book until rather recently when I read multiple glowing reviews in a row. Thanks for including this in your giveaway!
