Book Inspection: The Devouring by Simon Holt

Plot Sketch: Reggie (her proper name is Regina) and her best friend Aaron are obsessed with Horror. Reggie works at the local bookstore, where she gets to see the books that come through before they go on the shelves. This awesome old journal comes through which peaks her interest. She reads her little brother Henry horror bedtime stories, but he's a good sport about it. That is, until she reads to him out of the journal about the Vours... spirits that will possess you by feeding on your fear and then Henry is consumed by one on Sorry Night (Dec 22). Reggie and Aaron research and set out on a quest to find out if there is any way to save her little brother from the dark Vour that now inhabits him.

Verdict: I Heart It! One word: chilling. Expertly told, this intriguing page turner is a can't miss. Though it is part of a series, it stands alone and does not leave you on a cliff. I had no issues with language or content. I did not have nightmares. I read this as part of the read-a-thon, and really enjoyed it. I kind of wish I would have read it when it was dark out. Want to be more chilled? Read this December 21st. Trust me.
