Book Inspection: Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson

Plot Sketch: The Hopewell Hotel is the epitome of Art Deco fabulous from its 1929 rennovation (way before Black Tuesday) and has been in the Martin family for generations. Today, the Martins have four children, and the Hopewell is more like a money pit. All of the pipe repairs, the furnishings breaking down, and the scratchy towels detract from the experience. Where the Hopewell does not lack is in its level of service. On their fifteenth birthdays, each Martin child gets a room that is theirs to service. On Scarlett's day, she gets a key to the Empire Suite, which is the most expensive suite in the hotel and is rarely occupied. Mrs. Amy Amberson arrives about an hour or so after Scarlett gets the key and announces that she'll be moving into the Empire Suite for the duration of the summer. This is the story of Scarlett's relationship with Mrs. Amberson and all of the quirks and fun journeys that go along with it. Oh, and there's a little bit of romance too, but I'll let you read that so that I don't spoil it for you.

Verdict: I Heart It! I liked this a lot. I read it fairly quickly, and once I got past page 130, didn't want to put it down. What's on page 130 you ask? Oh, nothing much, the story just gets better and better from that point on. It's a great story and has multiple layers that both teens and adults will enjoy. Please note that it is not chalk-full of profanity, which made me happy. There are a lot of layers to this story which added complexity and depth to a story that could have been routine and run-of-the-mill. It was refreshing to read a great story that didn't need profanity for shock or entertainment value, and reassured me that you can have a great book without a bunch of words I wouldn't say let alone want to read. The conflicts are real. The characters feel like they could be people you know. The writing is good. Pick this one up if you like YA chicklit - you'll be happy you did. If you haven't tried YA chicklit, pick this up and give it a whirl, then let me know what you think. I think you'll heart it too!

Nothing, and I can't wait for the sequel - Scarlett Fever.

There are not chapter numbers... so I counted and there are 44. Love the chapter names though... like The Other Famous Whitehouse and Punch In A Velvet Glove. Great stuff.
