Book Inspection: The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

Plot Sketch: Kyra is thirteen. She is the eldest daughter of her father's third wife. Oh yeah, they live in a polygamist cult. One day, their entire family has the privilege of having the prophet and some of his apostles over to one of their trailers. The whole family is hoping that he is coming to visit to make their father an apostle. You see, being an apostle means that you have a real house and some more comfortable features. While waiting, Kyra's mind begins to focus on all her sins and how uncomfortable she will be when the prophet arrives. Have they found out about her trips to the county's mobile library? Have they found out about her forbidden boyfriend? When the prophet and his posse arrive, they indicate that the reason that they have come, and it's not to make Kyra's father an apostle. It's to announce that the prophet has had a vision that Kyra is to marry her uncle -- her father's brother. This is the story about her family's quest to get out of the prophet's decision.

Verdict: I Heart It. Definitely one of the best books I've read all year. Williams is an amazing writer. I don't recall an instance of stumbling over the sentence structure or grammar. The book is pretty short, but I didn't even put it down. I read it in one sitting, in the wee hours of the morning and despite the strong themes, I believe that with some parental guidance, this is a good story for probably 12 and up. I think that adults will especially enjoy this story because of its subject matter is riveting.

The Gauntlet:

At what location does most of the story take place?
I believe it is rural Utah.

What is the main character's name?
Kyra Leigh Carlson (I have debated over how to pronounce her first name because I personally know people who pronounce it both k-eye-ra and k-ee-ra, so I struggled a little with that throughout the story)

Does I Heart Monster like the main character?
I adore her. She listens to herself, takes stands to defend herself, and I rooted for her throughout the whole book.

How long did it take I Heart Monster to finish the book?
like 3 hours.

Did I Heart Monster get stuck at any points in the book? If so, why?

Is this a good read for Monster?
Not for Monster, and honestly, I don't envision a lot of guys reading it.

What, if anything, would I Heart Monster change to make the book more interesting?

What was I Heart Monster's favorite line?
I can't single one out, but I assure you that the writing is excellent.

How many chapters were in the book?
There were not any chapters, just 4 parts, which I found annoying at first, but since I didn't actually put the book down, grew to love.
