*WINNERS* George Pelecanos' The Night Gardener

Jeanne couldn’t be sure that she was being followed, but she decided to get out her phone to be safe. When she made the move to open her purse, she was grabbed from behind.

“Don’t move.”

She froze. She couldn’t move if she had wanted to – she was terrified and his fingers were locked around her arms. He pushed her into the alleyway, keeping her facing away from him.

“Please don’t hurt me.”

She saw stars and felt wetness sliding down her face. Her head throbbed with pain. She would not speak again. She waited for it to end. --Cari
