Book Inspection: Dead Is The New Black by Marlene Perez

Plot Sketch: It's a new school year. Daisy heads to school and notices ex-best-friend, Samantha looks pale, and she's dragging around a miniature sized coffin, wtf. Practically best friend, Ryan, has always had a thing for Samantha, and Daisy knows it. So when she mentions Sam's rather ghastly appearance, Ryan says she's still hot. Now Daisy comes from a family of psychics. Not the fake phone-a-psychic types, but her sister Rose can read your mind, and her other sister Poppy is telekinetic. Mom solves crimes using her psychic ability with Chief Mendez, who just so happens to be Ryan's dad; Daisy has no psychic ability at all Girls start turning up dead, having seizures, and getting sick for no reason and since Mom is working on the case, she reaches out to Daisy's older sisters for help. When Daisy offers her help, her mom and sisters say no, so she decides to do her own snooping around with the help of Ryan, to see what is happening to her classmates.

Verdict: I Heart It!! I saw this on a shelf at the store and thought it looked spunky enough to pick up. I was right. I'm reading the second in the series, Dead Is A State Of Mind right now. I liked the story:time ratio meaning it felt like I got a lot of story for the amount of time I invested in the book. It's always a plus when you start thinking about a book that you just finished while watching a TV show, then you know it left an impression on you. I'd recommend it for you to read if you haven't already. The third book comes out soon.

The Gauntlet:

At what location does most of the story take place?
Nightshade, CA which is near San Francisco

What is the main character's name?
Daisy Giordano

Does I Heart Monster like the main character?
Despite Daisy joining the cheer squad, I did like her. I think sleuthing is an acceptable reason for joining a bunch of snotty girls. Daisy is down to earth, loves to cook, and is pretty clueless about relationships, all of which made her more endearing to me.

How long did it take I Heart Monster to finish the book?
2 hours (it's not 200 pages)

Did I Heart Monster get stuck at any points in the book? If so, why?
Obviously not if I finished it in 2 hours.

Is this a good read for Monster?
While I think some guys would like the story, I don't think that you would be able to get many of them to read it with the pink cover.

What, if anything, would I Heart Monster change to make the book more interesting?
I wish that there was a little more description of the paranormal characters that appeared in the book. It could have given a little more context for some of the scenes, although, I'm not sure where the author would have placed said description.

What was I Heart Monster's favorite line?
“If only her father could see her now – tough little Lois turning into a girly, emotional mess.”

How many chapters were in the book?
21. Short chapters, which make me happy.

Does the author have a website?
Yes: MarlenePerez.com
