Book Inspection: The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening by L.J. Smith

Plot Sketch:
Elena has them all. She's the most popular girl in Fells Church, Virginia. She spent the summer in France and now she's back at school. She's kind of dreading school and the people, and then she sees him. Stefan. Oh Stefan. The Awakening takes you through the tale of Elena and Stefan's dance, some of Stefan's story, and makes Stephanie Meyer look like she ripped off L.J. Smith big time. Note: The current release of the book has The Awakening and The Struggle combined into one volume.

I Heart It. I will continue reading the series. This volume is hosted online until April 14th. It's an interesting way to read a book!

The Gauntlet:

At what location does most of the story take place?
Fells Church, VA, USA

What is the main character's name?
Elena Gilbert

Does I Heart Monster like the main character?
I like Elena, I think she's a strong character and I like that she's not afraid to be who she is.

How long did it take I Heart Monster to finish the book?
1.5 days. Reading it online was a little more difficult than I had guessed. I'm not sure I totally love the e-book thing yet.

Did I Heart Monster get stuck at any points in the book? If so, why?
Not that didn't have to do with technical issues!

Is this a good read for Monster?
I don't think he'd like it... but some men (the ones who enjoy Twilight) might.

What, if anything, would I Heart Monster change to make the book more interesting?
I wish Stefan was stronger. But I haven't finished the series yet and that may very well change! Who knows.

Does the author have a website?
Yes. L.J. Smith has a site for her blog where she talks about all of her books. And she's got a rockin' portrait of her with a unicorn. I'm jealous.

Acquire It:

Used: $8.47 (includes shipping)
New: $8.57 (includes shipping)

So I was chatting on twitter with a few folks about the Vampire Diaries and how I had missed them somehow when they were first released, if you did too, and you like the YA teen vampire scene, you should definitely read these!

These books totally hooked me on LJ Smith. I had them all by the time I finished high school, even her two fantasy books. And as much as I loved The Vampire Diaries (and must get my hands on the new #5), I think I liked her later series Dark Visions and The Forbidden Game better--if that's possible. They might be harder to find, 'cause they're not being rereleased (as far as I know), but they'd be worth the hunt!

Thanks for the tip Jena! I'll definitely keep my eye out for them.

You're right - re-reading LJ Smith and her works once again makes me feel like Stephenie Meyer was (despite her ever-changing statements about what she has and hasn't read when it comes to vampires) "influenced" by TVD etc. Sadly a lot of Twifans think LJS ripped of Stephenie Meyer, despite having been published a decade before. Oh well.

I like Elena because she's not without flaws, and she grows, changes and improves over the course of the books, as characters should.

Enjoy the second part of Diaries, then proceed directly onto Night World and the first in the Diaries sequel trilogy!

I don't know, i prefer her Night World series to Vampire Diaries, maybe because Vampire Diaries is too twilight-ish for me...
But it's not too bad, and yep, i agree that Stefan should be stronger as well...It's annoying sometimes, how the good guys have to be all mushy and soft.
